Winnetou's Horses (224/268)

It was here in the Dinaric Alps in the former Yugoslavia that Karl May's world-famous Winnetou movies were filmed in the 1960s. To this day, the region is still wild and untouched. And here, against what was once a film backdrop there now live wild horses. These are feral workhorses, which have lived for several generations in the mountains of Bosnia Herzegovina at altitudes of 1,500 metres. Their forefathers were released into the wild by their owners 40 years ago. With the arrival of tractors, they were no longer needed to work the fields. Since then, the horses have been living free and independent in the mountains and must provide for themselves in order to stay alive. Their habitat is rocky and barren. Summer temperatures can rise to 30° C and water is scarce. In winter, the cold can reach icy depths of -40° C. But the animals are used to overcoming adversity. After all they stem from a robust race of farm horses. The worst threat they face does not come from the wolves who occasionally waylay them but from people instead.
