Who'll Put His Hand In The Crocodile's Mouth? (104/268)

Whether in the zoo or in the wilderness - anyone who captures, transports or gives medical treatment to wild animals first has to tranquilize them. Whether elephant or wildcat, rhinocerous or crocodile - the anaesthetic must ensure a "deep sleep" without endangering the animal. In Grzimek's time this was still a very hazardous and risky undertaking for both man and beast. This has changed - and it is no coincidence that it was a zoo vet who achieved this. He is wellknown among zoologists and game-keepers all over the world: Professor Henning Wiesner with his "Munich Mixture". This narcotic drug, which he developed in the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, can be administered to the most diverse animals - by means of a special blowpipe, modelled on those used by South-American Indians and and converted by Wiesner for his purpose. The team travels with Professor Wiesner to South America where he instructs not only vetinary surgeons but also wild-life biologists and rancheros: for with his method endangered wild animals, threatened by extinction due to the decimation and reduction of their habitats, can be resettled in protected areas.
