Where Are You Going, Little Honey Buzzard? (260/268)

A chance crash landing in Munich hands researchers a golden opportunity to discover the migratory habits of a very secretive bird of prey, the honey buzzard. They are known to winter in West Africa but their summer residence has never been quite clear, until now.

When a young honey buzzard crash lands in Munich city center it poses a puzzle and sparks an intriguing research project. The young bird is rescued, and taken to a nearby bird of prey sanctuary where he is nursed back to health. As we still have a great deal to learn about the behavior of this migratory bird, it is decided to fit this one with a little transmitter which from the day of his release should help to reveal his "personal secret". Where does this bird spend his summers? The radio signals show that he finally ends up near Poland's Baltic Sea coastline. It is there that the film crew finds him again, in a real paradise for honey buzzards who prefer to dine on the wasp honeycomb that they dig out of the earthen nests. It is also precisely the day on which he is about to set out on his long journey to his wintering grounds. Like all European honey buzzards, this journey takes him to West Africa every year. But as early as the Black Forest he must contend with bad weather - and other dangers. And that's with a good five thousand kilometers yet to go.
