Whale Sharks (235/268)

The whale shark is a giant of the oceans - the largest of all fish. And yet our knowledge of these imposing creatures is still scant. This made the information passed onto the film-makers all the more astonishing and proved reason enough for them to travel to New Guinea.

In the west of the large island, in the Bay of the Birds of Paradise, or Cenderawasih Bay, as it is also known, it was said that groups of whale sharks would convene in the days around a full moon. What Eberhard Meyer and his camera crew found when they got there exceeded their expectations. For days they lived with the whale sharks, as it were, aiming to discover why these giants of the sea gather, almost magically, around the swaying platforms, onto which night after night fisherman go out to haul in their modest catch. However, does this closeness with the humans bring with it an unexpected risk?
