Turkey - Exploring The Latmos Mountains (101/151)

The Latmos Mountains, Lake Bafa and the little village of Kapikiri are located in Western Turkey, 10 miles from the Aegean coast. To the north, the lake borders on the Maeandrian Plain. On its Eastern shore, the Latmos rises a stately 1400 meters from sea level, all the way to the peak of one of the highest and holiest mountains of ancient Anatolia. The cave paintings in the caves of the Latmos are among the oldest evidence of human beings, while the residents continue to use the caves to this very day, as cattle pens or refuge for the descendants of shepherd families, while their herds graze on the summer pastures at higher elevations. The doc follows a young mountain guide on the old paths of his nomad ancestors to a nomad woman living all alone in the highest ranges of the Latmos. For her, the seclusion and isolation of nature is still the greatest joy and a continuous source of inspiration. At the center of village life in the hamlet of Kapikiri is the little mosque, which the young Imam Abdullah Idin opens to "Unbelievers", even on Friday prayers. He gives us a glimpse of his family life, a religious conversation with a superstitious old lady, and a burial rite celebrated in the middle of busy everyday village life.
