Tunisia - The South: Berber Women And Desert Sons (34/151)

Desert and steppe, a vast desiccated salt lake and fertile oases, wild mountainous land with peculiar storage chambers and cave dwellings of the Berber tribes - the interesting tourist destinations in Tunisia are to be found mainly in the south. Quite understandable that much feature film footage was shot there - including some episodes of "Star Wars". The film team travelled through the Dahar Mountains and observed life in the troglodyte dwellings, which have been carved into the soft stone around Matmata for centuries. For days the team roamed through the desert with nomads, sometimes riding on camels, sometimes on foot and tested at first hand life without the aids of civilisation. The author also visited the Medina and the markets of the cities, spoke to both young and old Tunisians about their work and their life in this eminently likeable North-African country.
