Tiny Gems - The Mystery of the Smallest Hummingbird in the World

Which is the more beautiful hummingbird - the lophoris magnifica or the heliactin cornuta, also known as the horned sungem?
The over three hundred species of hummingbirds display an amazing diversity. The tiniest and most delicate of all colibris are also the most magnificent - they are the smallest birds in the world. Could it be that somewhere an even tinier, hitherto undiscovered colibri species exists? Dieter Kunze, a dedicated hummingbird researcher, believes this is possible.
The adventurous journey into the world of unknown hummingbirds takes us first into the Andes of North Peru, into the realm of the puma and the condor. This is said to be the habitat of a tiny colibri, its existence as yet undocumented. In search of the mysterious tiny gem in the wild mountainous landscape we encounter many rare and beautiful colibris - and finally an incredibly tiny bird. Yet which species this is, whether a new distribution area or even a new colibri species has been discovered - these questions have not yet been answered.
In the course of 15 years, Dieter Kunze has built up a unique colibri research station at the Brazilian Atlantic coast in order to breed new generations of endangered species and to study unknown patterns of behaviour. His breeding successes and the exemplary conditions in which the birds are kept have gained him a certain renown in Brazil.
Nowhere else is it possible to observe such an array of exceptional and beautiful hummingbirds.
