The Year Under The Church Roof Of Au (109/268)

At Easter they move into the village church, at Whitsun the first offspring arrive, in summer they thrive under the church roof, and when the Harvest Festival is celebrated in Au, the mothers and their half-grown young leave the holy house. We are talking about - bats. Hardly any other animal is so shrouded in myths and sagas as the bat. Yet in Bavaria large colonies of bats have settled in the very place where the powers of darkness should be least effective - under the eaves of old churches. The author tells the tale of the bats' year in the village church at Au near Bad Aibling. In spring 800 female mouse-eared bats move into the roof and give birth in summer to almost the same number of offspring.
