The World's Most Beautiful Chamois (87/268)

The Italian National Park of Abruzzo is like an island for many of the species which were once at home throughout Europe: wolves, bears, lynxes and golden eagles. But even here life is not entirely free of care: only one herd remains of the Abruzzo chamois, once to be found throughout Italy - not enough to survive the infectious diseases which often spread to entire groups of animals and exterminate them. Although the Abruzzo chamois is related to the Alpine chamois, it is nevertheless a species of its own - which could soon be placed on the list of extinct species. In order to prevent this a zoo has been summoned to help: chamois from the National Park were sent to Munich. Here, in Hellabrunn Zoo, a new generation is to be bred which is then to be resettled in the wild. Not for the first time a way of ensuring the survival of a threatened species?
