Balloons have come to play an essential role in atmospheric research. Balloon sondes, as well as aeroplanes, are used to obtain data from the troposphere and the stratosphere. In 1898 Léon-Phillippe Teisserence de Bort used unmanned, instrumented balloons as sondes and measuring platforms in order to explore those layers of air which were above 10,000 metres. The result of his series of measurements resulted in a concept whereby the atmosphere is divided into two layers, the troposphere and the stratosphere. On May 27th 1931, August Piccard and his partner Paul Kipfer made the first successful manned balloon flight into the stratosphere, setting a new altitude record of 5,785 m. Ballone sind aus der Atmosphärenforschung nicht wegzudenken. Zur Datenermittlung aus der Troposphäre und der Stratosphäre werden neben Flugzeugen auch Ballonsonden eingesetzt. Léon-Phillippe Teisserenc de Bort benutzte 1898 unbemannte Ballone als Sonden und Messplattformen, um die einzelnen Luftschichten zu erforschen, die höher als 10.000 m lagen. Das Ergebnis seiner Messreihen ergab ein Konzept, nachdem die Atmosphäre in zwei Schichten unterteilt ist, die Troposphäre und die Stratosphäre. Es dauerte Jahre, bis bemannte Ballone in die Stratosphäre vordrangen. Am 27. Mai1931 gelangten Auguste Piccard und sein Partner Paul Kipfer als erste Menschen unbeschadet mit einem Ballon in eine Höhe von 15.785 m - in die Stratosphäre.
