Die unendlichen weiten Ebenen im Herzen Amerikas sind die Kulisse für eine Reise auf dem Santa Fe Trail. Sojafelder, Rinderweiden und - in weiten Abständen - kleine Farmstädte säumen die Highways. Erst nach tagelanger Fahrt tauchen am Horizont die Gipfel der Rocky Mountains auf. Rund 1500 Kilometer lang ist die Route des Santa Fe Trail vom Missouri nach Westen bis Santa Fe. Als bester Startpunkt für die Reise entpuppt sich Kansas City, von hier lässt sich der auf weite Strecken sogar ausgeschilderte Santa Fe Trail quer durch Kansas gut verfolgen. Am Westrand von Kansas beim heutigen Ort Cimarron teilt sich die Route in die kürzere Südstrecke und die hier gezeigte Mountain Route, die über Colorado und das sehr sehenswerte Bent's Old Fort entlang der Rocky Mountains nach New Mexico führt. Es wird zudem ein Abstecher nach Oklahoma unternommen, wo heute Indianerstämme wie die Osage bei Pawhuska leben.
