The Peasant's Wise Daughter (By The Brothers Grimm)

The Farmer's Daughter is given a riddle to solve by the king: "Come to see me, not dressed or undressed, not naked, not riding, not walking, not driving, not at night or day, come with a present and without." If she solves it, the king promises not only to release her father from prison, but also to marry her...

A garden on the roof of their humble cottage: with this idea the clever farmer's daughter amazes the king so much that he allows her father to keep the plot of land that they thus acquire by means of a trick. The king is not accustomed to such wit and self-assurance. He is bored by princesses such as Eulalia, constantly invited by his mother in the hope of finding a suitable bride. The king much prefers to watch the stars through his telescope. Instead of ruling he thinks up riddles: "Come to see me, not dressed or undressed, not naked, not riding, not walking, not driving, not at night or day, come with a present and without..."

The clever farmer's daughter is able to solve this riddle. The king falls in love with her and wants to marry her. With new clothes and hairstyle the clever farmer's daughter looks quite different, but in her heart she is still as self-assured and good as she always was. This puts her in danger. For the king's cousin and, above all, his wife hope to seize the throne themselves, and they hatch a wicked plot. In the end it is the cleverness of the farmer's daughter that saves the king's life.
