The Mute Giants Of Parfuri (225/268)

The "African baobab" is one of the largest tree species on the continent. These trees grow to be 800 years old and from about their 80th year have a diameter of up to six metres with a height of up to 20. They are home to many bird species but also other forms of life.   In the most northerly corner of Kruger Park, in a place called Thulamela, there is a peculiar collection of these giants. Here, these centuries-old trees stand in rank and file, precisely equidistant apart.   Thulamela is a holy place ("place of birth"), a rocky fortification on a hill. It was inhabited from around 1500 to 1600 AD. Did those inhabitants plant the trees and did the trees then outlast those people by so very many years? Together with Dr. Michele Hofmeyr and Prof. Stephen Woodworth, the film crew goes in search of answers to these questions.
