The Monkeys With The Big Noses (58/268)

Exclusively on the island of Borneo, among mangroves and river banks in the rainforest close to the coast, a rare species has found the perfect retreat. Thanks to the "huge conk" in their faces the proboscis monkeys are among the most bizarre creatures in the animal kingdom. Are they also different from their fellow- primates in other ways? The biologist Felix Heidinger wanted to know, and so the team observed a group in Sabah, in the Malaysian part of Borneo. The large males - only the males have these long noses - are complex characters: uncompromising harem bosses, but also sensitive protectors. The females - in a manner unique among primates - allow themselves the freedom of changing groups, and with this the fathers of their offspring. Often the new world is only a daring leap away - a nearby tree or the other bank of the jungle river.
