The Little Match Girl (by Hans Christian Andersen)

The Little Match Girl is the story of an orphan girl, who despite her hopeless situation in an inhumanely run orphanage, remains a source of hope and love - a love that even after her death changes the lives of many other children.
Little Inga lives in an orphanage. She must work hard for Mrs. Landfried, who rules the orphans with an iron fist. Inga and her best friend Emil are often punished, but they always stick together. One cold Christmas Day, Inga, Emil and the other children are sent to a nearby town to sell matches, but no-one is interested in them. Except for one policeman, who is nice to them. Emil has not managed to sell any matches and is terrified of returning to Mrs.Landfried. So Inga gives him the pennies she has earned and sends him back to the orphanage. The little girl then carries on, trying her luck. She takes strength from her amulet, in which her parents appear whenever she wants to see them. She meets a stranger who seems to have known her and her parents. She goes to the house where they had all lived together as a family. The stranger is also there seeking shelter from the icy wind. He keeps her company in the bitter cold. To warm herself, the little girl strikes a match. In the bright gleam of the warming light, she sees her parents in her warm house, which is beautifully decorated for Christmas. Meanwhile, Emil and the policeman are searching the town for her. When they arrive at Inga's house, she is sitting on the snow-covered ground, smiling happily. She has frozen to death. Years later, Emil is the new head of the orphanage. He has learned much from his strong friend Inga and takes good care of the children. He now wears her amulet and is forever connected with Inga - because she lives on in his memories.
