The Last Panda (164/268)

Not for nothing is the giant panda the heraldic animal of the WWF. According to the prognoses, it could become extinct as a wild animal in our century. Despite the many and diverse attempts to protect the last pandas in China's bamboo forests, the news from the protected regions is hardly encouraging. The panda bear is suffering the fate of many other wild animals: relentless hunting and illegal animal trading have not ceased - even the threat of the death penalty seems to be no deterrent. And everywhere the lebensraum for wild animals is decreasing - high population pressure and expanding agriculture are posing a threat to the last remaining protected areas. For years, therefore, many zoos have tried to set up "preservation breeding" programmes for the giant panda. Even top politicians constantly declare their suport for this cause. Yet, hitherto, these attempts have failed almost everywhere - only in China has there been some success in the zoo breeding. But will this suffice ?. - or when will the last panda die?
