The Jaguar Hunter (123/268)

Martinez has already killed over 40 jaguars. He is the hunter whom the farmers in Venezuela call when they have another "problem animal", i.e. a jaguar who attacks the calves of the rancheros. The farm labourers usually try to kill the jaguars, although that has been prohibited for years. If, however, they do not manage to kill this shy wild cat themselves, then they call Martinez. And, for some years now, this is the best thing that can happen to the jaguar. Martinez no longer kills these spotted cats. The animals are anaesthetized and then resettled in regions where they can cause no damage. The "operation captures" are carried out in co-operation with Venezuelan biologists, who learned their anaesthetization know-how from a German vet. They set off together with the Jaguar hunter in search of the "problem animal", hoping to catch it before it is killed by the bullets of the farm labourers.
