The Guinea Pigs Of Panama - Worshiped Delicatessen (20/268)

The Paca, the big brother of our beloved household pet, the Guinea pig, lives in the jungles of Panama. The natives of the Kuna tribe even say it has magical powers - encountering one in broad daylight is said to bring bad luck. The paca also plays a special role on feast days - as the feast. As the paca becomes more and more rare, the Kuna have tried to raise and eat real pigs, instead of Guinea pigs. But the Kuna haven't taken to the big porkers with the curly tails. They smell funny, and they're just not good enough for the highest feast of the year. Another solution had to be found. The only one who could help was zoologist Virginia Riouz, who knew how to breed the pacas. She agreed to share her expertise with the tribe, and provided a pair of pacas as well. If all goes well, these two pacas will be the progenitors of many generations of descendants. The few surviving pacas in the jungle would no longer be hunted, and the Kuna could still follow their age-old traditions...
