The Empire State Building (62/108)

It is one of the landmarks of New York and often regarded as the 8th wonder of the world. For almost half a century it was, with its 381 metres, the highest building in the world: the Empire State Building. The lack of space in the cities meant that a new type of building was called for: this was the birth of the skyscraper. John Jacob Raskob, the founder of General Motors, had decided to build the highest skyscraper - within only 18 months. The Empire State Building took over the steel skeleton structure, following the example set by Gustave Eiffel in the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The highest building in the world now stands in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia: the Petrona Towers loom up 450 metres into the sky of the megacity.
