The Donkey Race (194/268)

Donkeys are said to be stubborn and mulish. How can it be that of all animals donkeys run in a race? The annual donkey race in the Bavarian town of Hersbruck has a long tradition and takes place already for the 30th time in 2010. It is the most popular donkey race in Germany. Thousands of spectators attend this spectacle. "Animal World" visited three horse breeding farms and watched the donkeys during the preparations for the race: the winner of the previous year, the alltime favorite and an underdog. What kind of life do the animals lead? Which special features do they have? How do they train for the race? Which secret coaching methods did the individual owners develop? Even after an intensive training the success is all but predictable as the donkeys will not make up their mind whether to run or not before the race is actually started.
