The Blue Light (By The Brothers Grimm)

Jakob is a soldier, but is denied his honest wages by the king when he leaves the army. He follows an enticing scent, hoping to find good luck and fortune. But what he thought was a beautiful woman turns out to be a cruel witch. When he refuses to retrieve the Blue Light from a dry well for her, she drops him back down the shaft. In the face of certain death, the poor wretch lights his pipe with the bluish flame - which turns out to be a stroke of genius. A genie emerges from the magical light to serve him and fulfil his every wish - as long as it's properly put: When he asks for the king's most prized possession, he doesn't expect to be brought the king's daughter instead of gold and treasure. Another instalment in the successful Grimms' Fairy Tales series.
