The Bears Are Coming (144/268)

All of Europe was at one time the home of the brown bears. Nowadays there are only a few retreats where these great beasts of prey still live. In Austria, however, during the last ten years, these shaggy giants have once again found a home - they are no longer far from Germany. Three animals who were resettled in the wild have reproduced - there are now about twenty, nobody knows exactly how many. Encounters with bears are still rare in Austria - and usually an exciting experience. Forest workers can bear witness to this. In Rumania, too, people have many a tale to tell about their bears. The animals have lost their fear of the city lights and now search for food every night in the dustbins of a high-rise block of flats - and the residents enjoy this nocturnal show. In Russia, however, bears avoid people, for there they are still hunted. Not only the locals but also foreign trophy hunters regard bear-hunting as a fun sport - and this in winter, the season when the females give birth. If they are killed, then the little orphans starve or freeze to death. Some of them, however, land in a very special kind of orphanage.
