The Arctic Fox In The Ark (69/268)

When the arctic fox comes out of his den here, he need not fear the fur trappers. In Lapland he is almost extinct, in "Nordens Ark" in Sweden attempts are being made to preserve the last of this species and to breed a new generation. The snow leopards are in much the same situation. In the Ark they are safe from poachers; Tai, the most successful female, has already given birth here to 10 snow leopard babies. Nordens Ark is a jewel among the European zoos. Not only because it fulfils a special purpose, dedicated as it is to promoting the breeding of many rare animals. The Ark is also embedded in a beautiful fiord landscape. The vast enclosures are situated between boulders on mountainous terrain. Apart from the species already mentioned, other animals which have also been particularly successful in the breeding programme are some rare reindeer species, European wildcats and wolverines.
