Kilimanjaro towers majestically over the African plains enticing people from all over the world, but beware, this charismatic mountain is not for the fainthearted.
Rarely on holiday do happiness and despair, elation and misery exist so closely together as they do on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Thirty-thousand hikers come here every year hoping to experience the joy of summiting Africa's highest mountain. Ten thousand fail to reach the peak; some thirty holidaymakers die annually - one in a thousand. If flying were similarly hazardous, several dozen airplanes would fall from the sky on a daily basis.
Kilimanjaro is one of the most underestimated peaks in the world. For many hikers the ascent becomes a hellish trip through one of the most beautiful and most extraordinary landscapes on earth. Altitude sickness is the rule here not the exception: shortness of breath, headaches, nausea and nose bleeds. Sleepless nights and hiking stages of up to 23 hours. The reward for these extreme exertions is a genuine adventure and the indescribable views from the highest freestanding massif on earth.
