Surviving - With A Little Help (226/268)

For a long time, the wild horses were very much left to their own devices. In hot, dry summers or extreme, long winters they simply died. However, since their island became part of the Rostowski National Park, they now have access to water from an old, re-commissioned water conduit. The foal had a dramatic start in life. It was born in the wretchedly hot, high summer of southern Russia, when the temperatures in the pre-Caspian steppes rose to almost +40° Celsius. This stretch of land with its many salt lakes and salt marshes is a relic from an age over five million years ago when the primordial Tethys Ocean extended from the Atlantic deep into the lowlands of South-Western Asia.   Today, these tall, beautiful animals know no saddle and are not accustomed to humans. Strong and robust, these "Don mustangs" fight their tenacious battle for survival on a barren island, stranded in the middle of a salt lake that is over 150 kilometres long and 15-18 kilometres wide near the Don delta..
