When
physician Dr. Kugler is found dead in his office, the stolen
prescription drugs and signs of a break-in point to the deed of a
desperate junkie. A young man who was seen fleeing the office at the
time of the murder becomes the top suspect.
Investigators
Schneider and Schmücke find out the doctor was treating poor,
uninsured patients, many of them illegal aliens. Could the killer be
one of them? The search for the fleeing man leads the detectives to a
dead end, however: Leonid Cherkassov has an accident trying to escape
a police checkpoint, leaving him seriously injured and unable to
talk. It seems certain he was one of Kugler's patients. But why
does the doctor's assistant swear she's never seen the young
Ukrainian before? The case takes a surprising turn when the body of
another illegal alien is found floating in the river - a young
woman. She turns out to have been Cherkassov's girlfriend. Both of
them worked for a recycling company that belonged to the assistant's
husband. He becomes a suspect when it turns out he was quarrelling
with Kugler.
But what's the connection?
