Sepp And Xaver - Galloways As Landscapers (100/268)

They are no ordinary bulls: Sepp and Xaver, two young Galloways, eat to protect nature. Together with five other Galloways, they spend the summer in the semi-wild of a valley near Jettenbach on the River Inn. The valley belongs to Count Törring, who has leased it for one Euro a year to the Organisation for the Conservation of Nature. Xaver & co. are needed to protect the terrain from overgrowth and to preserve it as an open landscape with a great diversity of species. A life very different from the one which beef steers on a farm are forced to lead. Heat and cold, swarms of flies, fights for dominance and stray dogs - Xaver & co. have to cope with all of these, almost like the wild oxen in times past. Yet they inhabit a small paradise and, with their appetite, they ensure that the valley is preserved as a habitat for diverse species of flora and fauna. The yellow-bellied toad and the grass snake, the meadow grasshopper and the dung beetle - the valley of Jettenbach is full of life thanks to the conservation of the landscape by the Galloways.
