The three-part "Itineraries" series takes us right across Scotland, from the Hebrides via the highlands to the Scottish lowlands. Long ago a nobleman named Crimtham set off on a journey. He was to go down in history as Saint Columba the Elder. In his search for God his adventurous spirit led him into the world of the Scottish hills and lakes and to the mysterious islands of the Hebrides. These islands still have much to offer today: for one thing there is the enchanting landscape, then there is also a world-famous whisky. The Scottish highlands are well-known above all for their history. But what is it like there today? The highlands begin beyond a Glasgow-Edinburgh line and north of Scone, the historical coronation site of the Scottish kings. In the Grampian highlands Rannoch Moor is situated, scene of numerous fascinating tales. Between the Isle of Skye, Ullapool and in the foothills of the north-west highlands one can explore the jagged coast of Western Ross, cosseted by the Gulf Stream. Scotland's southern border to England runs between Solway Bay in the west and the River Tweed in the east. This border area of the lowlands, scene of many battles between the English and the Scots, extends to the outskirts of Glasgow. Nowadays the Tweed reveals nothing of the past fates of both English and Scots. Almost a whole generation of Scots lost their lives on the English bank, while many English also died in the famous-infamous battle of Flodden Field.
