Sangalaki - A Decision On The Turtle's Beach (168/268)

Almost 100 kilometres off the east coast of Borneo lies the island of Sangalaki, covering an area of 12 hectares. At first glance a paradise - yet Sangalaki is a hot spot of species protection. Every night, as on virtually no other beach in south-east Asia, turtles still come ashore regularly. The next morning, however, their nests are completely plundered by egg-collectors. This gem of nature is threatened by destruction. Meanwhile, a rescue initiative has completed plans to set up a protected section of the beach. Are conflicts with the indigenous population to be expected? Or will it be posssible to convince everyone that the fate of endangered species is more closely entwined than many people imagine with that of humankind?
