S.O.S. - Baby Seal In Danger (77/268)

They lie on the beach, alone, helpless, abandoned. And they cry for their mother: this plaintive howling has given them a name - they are wailers. In early summer, when the baby seals are born on the sandbanks off the German coast, it happens again and again that the little ones are separated from their mothers. Some are too weak to follow the mother, others lose her during the fierce spring storms somewhere in the raging North Sea. Seals are mammals and without their mothers' milk the wailers cannot survive. At the North Sea, however, there is help for the stranded babies. Seal hunters, who bear this name without ever having hunted a seal themselves, search for the helpless young animals and take them to the seal station Friedrichskoog. There the little ones are fed and hopefully learn everything they need to survive in the sea - for in late summer they will be taken back to where they belong: in the North Sea.
