Raccoon Party (267/268)

Raccoons are cute, intelligent and hugely adaptable. Their striking markings have long been interwoven into the legends and stories of the Native American peoples. In Germany, though, they are making a bit of a nuisance of themselves, constantly on the search for food in towns and cities across the country.

Raccoons are cute and intelligent and their great adaptability means that over the years their population has spread across practically all of Germany. In cities like Kassel they climb up the downpipes from the rain gutters as fast as they would trees.
In their native home, the American continent, they have long been admired for their cleverness and the skillful use of their paws. Numerous Indian legends surround the black-and-white Zorro mask of the raccoons, in which the markings were said to represent darkness and light, this world and the next. Indeed, many tribes mimic these markings in their traditional face painting. The name "raccoon" actually comes from the Indian word "aroucun". As they are omnivores and have no natural enemies, they have become a downright plague in Kassel, the raccoon capital of Germany: residents here try to scare them off by locking their recycling bins and putting electric fences on their roofs to stop the ever-hungry raccoons from causing havoc.
