Puss in Boots (By The Brothers Grimm)

Unlike his down-to-earth brothers Hubert and Hermann, Hans, the youngest son of the old miller, dreams of never-ending love and of blissful happiness on earth. But, most of all, he longs for a life without Abaddon, the evil sorcerer, who turns debtors into dogs.

The next victim on Abaddon's list is the old miller. But Hans' father dies and leaves Hermann the mill, Hubert the donkey and Hans the tomcat Minkus. Hans is offended by this inheritance and, in a fit of pique, he decides to have a pair of gloves made of the cat's fur. But then he can't bring himself to do this. Minkus is so grateful that he starts to talk and promises Hans to make his dreams come true if he buys him a pair of boots! Acting on impulse, Hans spends the last of his money on a pair of boots for the cat. With the boots the cat turns into a human being and disappears. Since the brothers cannot pay their taxes, Abaddon meanwhile turns Hubert into a dog. Hans reproaches himself: Why did he spend his money on those boots? But Minkus the cat catches some partridges in the forest and takes them as a gift to King Otto in the name of his alleged master, the Marquis of Carrabas. The cat's prey is a huge success. For King Otto is a gourmet, and Princess Frieda is also delighted by the delicious birds. Minkus returns to Hans bearing a sack full of gold. Hans can now pay Abaddon the money he is owed. But the sorcerer still doesn't give him back his brother. However, he has not reckoned with Puss in Boots. In the end Minkus turns the sorcerer into a mouse and eats him. Hans grows into his assigned role as a marquis. Frieda falls in love with the miller's son, and King Otto is thrilled with his son-in-law. Thus, in the end, Hans has more than he could ever have dreamed of...
