Porifera - Astounding World of the Sponge (4/7)

Everyone knows the bath sponge. Yet there are so many different types of sponge - over eight thousand known species, while it is estimated that there are over fifty thousand species in the oceans of the world. Biologists, physicists and pharmacologists have become increasingly interested in sponges - with astounding results. The glass sponge, for example, has needles made of pure quartz glass, which is far superior to the industrially produced glass fibre cables in telecommunications.  A German pharmacologist hopes to be able to solve an old problem of seafaring by using sponges to develop a marine coating for sea-going boats and ships. A familiar household object appears in a completely new light - as the high end of glass fibre technology and as the oldest multi-cellular organism, without a brain and without muscles.
