Pinnawela - An Orphanage For Elephants (115/268)

They are called Anuradha, Kumari or Bindu, and they live in an orphanage. Some of them are not even six months old, but a bottle of milk is not enough to satisfy them - for Pinnawela is an orphanage for elephants, the only one in the entire world. It was set up in Sri Lanka to protect the last Asian elephants. For, as everywhere in Asia, here too they are threatened by extinction - it is forbidden to hunt or to capture them. Stray animals, however, are still shot when they wander into the fields of the farmers. The orphaned offspring are taken care of in Pinnawela. Young elephants, who would otherwise have no chance of survival, find a home here. And since the breeding of elephants in zoos is rarely successful, the keepers of Pinnawela are particularly proud of the fact that the first-generation orphans have already given birth to the next generation.
