Pilot Whales at Risk (233/268)

Out in the Alboran Sea - where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet - live the last of the Mediterranean's pilot whales. In this area of extremely heavy shipping traffic, the whales have only a slim chance of survival. A pilot whale needs 50 kg of food every day, comprising primarily squid and other fish. In their (mostly nocturnal) search for food, the whales dive to depths of up to 600 meters. Ricardo Sagarminaga follows the animals with his research ship, Toftewag, in order to track and understand their migration routes. It is only through the establishment of seasonal special protection zones that he can give the animals back their urgently required living space.
