Die meisten Reisenden erreichen die Philippinen über die Hauptstadt Manila auf der Insel Luzon. Zwanzig Millionen Menschen leben hier auf engstem Raum. Extreme Armut steht protzigem Reichtum gegenüber. Die die es sich leisten können verbringen den Sommer in Baguio City, dem Tor zu den Stammesgebieten im Norden der Insel. Baguio ist bekannt für seine Geistheiler. Bilder von den blutigen Operationen ohne Instrumente gehen immer wieder um die Welt. Im zentralen Hochland dominieren die Stämme der Bontoc, der Kalinga und der Ifugao. Einst gefürchtete Kopfjäger, beweisen die Ifugao rund um die Provinzhauptstadt Banaue, dass sie auch begnadete Baumeister sind. Die Reisterassen gehören zu den eindrucksvollsten in Asien. Von Luzon geht es nach Palawan, der "last frontier" dem Wilden Westen der Philippinen. Hier leben die Batac noch fast wie in der Steinzeit. Intensiverer Kontakt mit der Zivilisation zerstört langsam aber sicher ihre Kultur. Ein geregelter Besuch von Touristengruppen soll dieses Problem eindämmen und den Batak zusätzliche Einnahmen bescheren. Im Norden der Insel liegt das malerische Bacuit Archipel. Eine der Haupteinnahmequellen der Einheimischen ist das Sammeln von Vogelnestern für die berühmte chinesische Suppe. Noch ist die Natur weitestgehend in Takt. Bereist man das Naturwunder mit seinen 45 imposanten Kalksteininseln mit einem der typischen Auslegerboote könnte man sich im Paradies wähnen.
