Paradisical Périgord - Treasure Chest in the Dordogne (150/151)

The Périgord belongs to Aquitaine, the south-western part of France, and includes the Département Dordogne with its capital city Périgueux.   The American writer Henry Miller was not the only one to describe this tranquil, rural region as "paradise". And, due to the over-abundance of its natural and cultural treasures, this still seems a fitting description of the Périgord's gentle, hilly landscape with its meandering rivers. There is much to delight the traveller here - over a thousand castles, fortified villages or bastides from the Middle Ages, about 200 caves and grottoes from the cradle of humankind and, of course, numerous culinary delicacies. How about truffled "foie gras" accompanied by a glass of "monbazillac", a naturally sweet dessert wine? After all, the Périgueux is a gourmet's paradise! Stopovers on the journey include Bergerac, Sarlat, Monpazier and Périgueux.

Das Périgord gehört zu Aquitanien, dem südwestlichen Teil Frankreichs und umfasst das Département Dordogne mit seiner Hauptstadt Périgueux.   Nicht nur für den amerikanischen Schriftsteller Henry Miller kam diese stille ländliche Region dem "Paradies" gleich. Die sanften Hügel- und Flusslandschaften des Périgord beeindrucken auch heute noch durch ihren überbordenden Reichtum an Natur- und Kulturschätzen. Dem Reisenden bieten sich mehr als tausend Schlösser, befestigte Dörfer oder Bastiden aus dem Mittelalter, etwa 200 Höhlen und Grotten, die zur Wiege der Menschheit gehören, und natürlich zahllose kulinarische Köstlichkeiten. Wie wär's mit getrüffelter "Foie Gras" und einem Glas natursüßen "Monbazillac" dazu? Das Périgord ist schließlich ein Schlemmerparadies! Stationen der Reisereportage sind u. a. Bergerac, Sarlat, Monpazier und Périgueux.
