Otters - Fishers On Duty (45/268)

They are the greediest fish-catchers of all. This is certainly one reason why they have virtually disappeared here. All the more amazing then seems a method used by fishermen in Bangladesh with tame otters - as partners who help to fill the nets. Felix Heidinger is in for some surprises in the Ganges delta. He meets fishermen who would be able to provide for their families without the help of the otters. For the otters also demand their share. No matter how meagre the hauls in the nets may be - each animal has to be given one kilo a day. But the people appreciate the value of these tamed animals. Along with house and boat, they are their most prized possession.
