Operation Irbis: Snow Leopards in Kirghizia (155/268)

Ahmed, Aman, Roman and Waldemar saddle their horses - Operation Irbis begins. The four men are gamekeepers in Kirghizia, their task is to protect the snow leopards in a huge new nature reserve. They are still undecided as to how to proceed; the only certainty is that the weeks ahead will be hard ones. The region in Central Asia where the last of these wild cats live is almost inaccessible - perpetual ice and metre-deep snow mean that it can only be reached on horseback or on foot. Nevertheless, the heavily armed rangers are determined to put a stop to the activities of the renowned poacher Smolin. Following in the footsteps of his father, who spent a lifetime catching snow leopards, 50 in all, his son is carrying on his work despite all bans and prohibitive laws. In his hunt Smolin has one great advantage over the rangers: he knows the uninhabited area like the back of his hand. However, the gamekeepers are undaunted. Their assignment is to protect the last of the snow leopards and this they intend to do; they are determined to succeed at any price - if necessary by force of arms.
