Oman - Oasis of the Orient (56/59)

Over the last 45 years, Oman, in the south east of the Arabian Peninsula, has developed into a modern state in a uniquely Omani fashion. The country is cosmopolitan and yet true to its own traditions. Modernization took place carefully, with the interests of Omani being given top priority. This film tours the capital city and breathtaking countryside, where modernity and traditionalism happily co-exist.

Over the last 45 years, Oman, in the south east of the Arabian Peninsula, has developed from a medieval fiefdom into a modern state - thanks to the enlightened Sultan Qaboos and bubbling oil revenues. The Omani are both cosmopolitan and true to their own traditions. The modernization of the country took place carefully, with the interests of its own population in mind. As a result, the country has retained much of its oriental flair. In the region of the capital city, which has grown up around the neighboring old port cities of Muscat and Muttrah, the Omani have consciously renounced the construction of spectacular skyscrapers like those in Dubai and have focused on more traditional construction methods and styles. The souk of Muttrah and those in the old oasis towns make visitors feel as if they have been transported to the Orient of times past.
