Roads in Norway almost always wend their way through spectacular landscapes, thus every summer they attract many tourists travelling by car. Nature lovers behind the windscreen and the steering wheel - a contradiction that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is trying to solve - with the project "National Tourist Routes". The Public Roads Administration launched competitions, employed architects, artists and engineers, with the result that stopping places are now under development that will be attractions in themselves. Rest areas and lookout points form modern works of art at the roadside. They attract guests and in many diverse ways they open up the view of the breathtaking natural landscape. And the streams of tourists can be more easily directed, a factor that makes good ecological sense. The journey itself becomes the destination. The drivers take their time, interrupt the journey, get out of their cars and may even take short hikes.

In Norwegen führen Straßen fast immer durch spektakuläre Natur, was in jedem Sommer viele Autotouristen anlockt. Naturliebhaber hinter Windschutzscheibe und Lenkrad - ein Widerspruch, den das Norwegische Straßenbauamt aufzulösen versucht. So entstand das Projekt "Nationale Touristenstraßen". Das Straßenbauamt schrieb Wettbewerbe aus, engagierte Architekten, Künstler und Ingenieure, und so sind Haltepunkte im Entstehen, die selbst zu Attraktionen werden. Rastplätze und Aussichtspunkte bilden moderne Kunstwerke am Straßenrand. Sie locken Gäste an und öffnen in mehrfacher Hinsicht den Blick auf die großartige Natur. Und die Touristenströme können besser gelenkt werden, was ökologisch sinnvoll ist. Die Reise selbst wird zum Ziel. Die Autofahrer nehmen sich Zeit, unterbrechen die Fahrt, steigen aus und unternehmen vielleicht sogar kleine Wanderungen.
