Newton, the Rhino Ranger (Kenya) (20/24)

Little heroes share their biggest dreams with us and prove great courage in these unique stories from all over the world. The lives of our protagonists are as varied, interesting and diverse as their home countries.

Three baby rhinoceroses are keeping 14 year old Newton busy. Their mothers were killed by poachers and now Newton is taking care of the calves. He feeds them a bottle of milk every three hours, but they are also encouraged to graze on leaves and grass.
Newton lives in Kenya. His father is a ranger in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is home to over 100 rhinos. Newton often helps out by looking after the rare Northern White Rhinoceros, a subspecies that is nearly extinct. Only a handful of the animals survive in the world. Many rhinos are killed by poachers every year in Africa. Their horns, which some people believe have magical properties, are worth more than gold on the black market.
Newton spends every spare minute with his favorite animals. He is not afraid of them, quite the opposite - he lovingly cares for the placid and sociable behemoths that can weigh up to four tons. And it is Newton's greatest wish to see his small charges grow into big rhinos that can live in safety.
