Monkeys On The Way To School (5/268)

The morning hours are among the most beautiful on Maratua, the small Indonesian island off the east coat of Borneo - were it not for the children's frightening encounters with the monkeys, who cast threatening glances and occasionally even gnash their teeth. Even the adults have come to dislike them. The inhabitants of Maratua have always been fishing folk with little interest in hunting, but since their plantations have been encroaching ever further on the monkey's forests, the animals are increasingly seizing the fruits of the fields and coconuts. How long can this go on? And what will happen if it turns out that these monkeys are a new subspecies of the long-tailed macaques and have to be placed under protection? Thomas Ziegler, a German biologist, is currently taking a look around the island.
