Mayotte - French Islands with an African Heart (41/59)

The island group of Mayotte is part of the volcanic archipelago of the Comoros and lies in the Mozambique channel between Madagascar and the coast of northern Mozambique. The former French colony is now claimed by the state of Comoros although the population voted overwhelmingly in 2009 to remain part of France - with the result that in March 2011, Mayotte became the 101st department of France. 95 per cent of the 190,000 strong population wanted it so: the euro is the official currency and as of 2014, Mayotte will be part of the EU.Mayotte, formerly covered by vanilla plantations and fields of ylang-ylang, now lives predominantly from aid money from the mother country, on which the many illegal immigrants from the Comoros are also focussed. From 2011 onwards, all citizens will be entitled to French social welfare.
