Die Insel Mauritius im Indischen Ozean ist zu jeder Jahreszeit einen Urlaub wert. Luft- und Wassertemperatur bleiben das ganze Jahr über relativ hoch. Die Tourismusbranche hat sich auf eine anspruchsvolle Kundschaft eingestellt. Zahlreiche Hotels bieten Luxus und Komfort; Wassersportmöglichkeiten stehen oft ohne Aufpreis zur Verfügung. Trotz dieser Annehmlichkeiten sollte man es nicht versäumen, Ausflüge in die Umgebung zu unternehmen. Da die Insel nicht allzu groß ist, kann sie während eines Urlaubs ganz erkundet werden. Gut die Hälfte der Insel ist mit Zuckerrohrplantagen bedeckt. Die Franzosen hatten den Anbau der von den Holländern eingeführten Pflanze in großem Stil vorangetrieben. Als Arbeiter hatten sie Sklaven aus Madagaskar und Ostafrika geholt. Als die Engländer die Insel besetzten und die Sklavenarbeit 1835 abschafften, kamen viele billige indische Arbeitskräfte als Gastarbeiter nach Mauritius. Sie bilden heute die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung. Daneben gibt es noch zahlreiche Chinesen, die vor allem nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf die Insel kamen. Dieses multikulturelle Völkergemisch und ihr toleranter Umgang miteinander machen den besonderen Reiz der Insel aus.
