Madagaskar ist mit rund 600.000 Quadratkilometer Fläche die viertgrößte Insel der Welt. Die Insel wird auch als der 6. Kontinent bezeichnet. Vor 150 Millionen Jahren wurde sie von Afrika und vor neunzig Millionen Jahren vom indischen Kontinent getrennt. Durch die isolierte Lage entwickelte sich eine sehr eigenständige Pflanzen- und Tierwelt. Weite Teile sind Naturreservate und Nationalparks, die aufmerksam geschützt werden. Nach Jahren des sorglosen Umgangs mit der Natur ist man bemüht, die Arten zu erhalten. Von einer vorsichtigen Öffnung für den Tourismus wird eine Verbesserung auch der Staatsfinanzen erhofft. Natur und Fauna sollen nicht darunter zu leiden haben. Im Isalo-Nationalpark mit bizarren, urzeitlichen Felsformationen, tiefen Schluchten gibt es endemische Pflanzenarten, Arten, die es nirgendwo anders auf der Welt gibt. In der vulkanischen Landschaft bei Ampefy gibt es nicht nur Geysire, heiße Quellen und Wasserfälle. Es ist auch die Heimat von Lemuren. Neun von den 13 Arten dieser Halbaffen leben hier.
