Lofty Dreams (8/49)

Many a person dreams of owning a spacious loft apartment in one of Munich's romantic districts - until this dream is shattered by the city's notorious property prices.

Munich's Detective Inspectors Ivo Batic and Franz Leitmayer are standing in the cellar of a tenement building that has already been almost completely renovated into luxury apartments. They are looking at the corpse of the former caretaker Grassl. The dead man has severe head injuries. Grassl's Thai wife and their son Ton have disappeared. The new caretaker Mikosz is only too eager to open all doors for them and aspires to play the investigator himself. Gerti from the butcher's on the ground floor knows all the residents: Pierre Traubinger with his fun-loving girlfriend Naomi and their various flatmates, the secretive Professor, the smart Frau von Helmstedt with her ever-changing string of male visitors and Karl Strobl, the plumber, who is in mourning for his father and has his workshop in the back yard. The profit-oriented owner Peter Bachinger also lives in the tenement. Most of them have a possible motive for murder. But to the annoyance of the two D.I.s the investigation, difficult enough as it is, is further hampered by the unhelpful behaviour of their normally so patient colleague Carlo Menzinger: instead of relieving Batic and Leitmayr of their tedious research tasks, Menzinger becomes involved in mysterious activities that evidently have nothing to do with the Grassl case.
