Little Tigers In Bavarian Forests (3/268)

The film-maker investigates whether real wild cats are still living in German forests - or are they only domestic cats that are living wild? And is the small population of wild cats in Germany too small and genetically impoverished to ensure the survival of the pure-bred wild cat in this country? A project has been launched to rescue the wild cat with the aim of linking the various habitats of the wild cats with one another and of checking the wild cats genetically. Wooden stakes with baits of valerian and cat-mint lure the wild cats. The cats rub against the stakes, some of their hairs stick to the rough wood. With these hairs a gene test can establish whether pure-bred wild cats still exist. Furthermore, one can find out whether the connected habitats are actually used by the wild cats.
