Wer nach La Réunion reist, fährt nach Frankreich. Die offizielle Sprache ist französisch, die Währung Euro, denn die Insel ist ein französisches Übersee-Departement. Bei der Ankunft fühlt sich der Reisende allerdings eher wie auf Hawaii oder in der Karibik - denn Réunion liegt vor der ostafrikanischen Küste im Indischen Ozean, in Nachbarschaft zu Madagaskar und Mauritius. Die tropische Insel fasziniert durch traumhafte Sandstrände und eine vulkanisch geprägte Landschaft. Erst ein knappes halbes Jahr ist es her, dass der Piton de la Fournaise ausgebrochen war. Für die Bewohner kein ungewöhnliches Ereignis, denn der Vulkan ist einer der aktivsten der Erde. Die ganze Insel ist aus vulkanischer Aktivität entstanden - zahlreiche Kraterkessel und der über 3.000 Meter hohe erloschene Piton de la Neige zeugen davon. La Réunion ist ein Naturparadies, das man sich soweit wie möglich zu Fuß erschließen sollte - und auch muss, denn viele großartige Regionen sind anders gar nicht erreichbar. Die Insel wird als ideales Terrain für Aktivurlauber angepriesen. Eine der herausragenden Touren ist die durch die drei Kraterkessel Cirque de Salazie, Cirque de Mafate und Cirque de Cilaos. Während der Osten der Insel mit dem Piton de la Fornaise und der vulkanischen Umgebung eher rau und abweisend wirkt, ist der Westen tropisch grün und geradezu lieblich. Dort ist La Réunion ein Badeparadies, denn St. Gilles besitzt traumhafte palmengesäumte Sandstrände. St. Gilles ist die Partystadt der Insel, dort tummeln sich am Wochenende die jungen Leute nicht nur am Strand, sondern auch in den vielen Kneipen und Diskotheken.
