Venice is unique in many respects. The location in the lagoon, the high density of historical buildings and, not least, the beauty of the city are unparalleled. And it is in winter, when the flocks of tourists have departed and the wintry sun casts its light on the city on the sea, that Venice reveals its true splendour. The film shows the city in January and February and presents people and artists who live and work here or visit regularly. Among them is a tailor who collects and hires historical carnival costumes, an artist who paints his pictures with red wine, a German woman who defied the fierce resistance of her colleagues to become the only gondoliera and a female doctor who has fallen under the spell of the carnival. Furthermore, the film-maker visits the cemetery island in the district of Dorsoduro, he watches a gondola maker at work and celebrates with guests from all over the world at a carnival ball in a palazzo.
